When a future Groom asked if we could squeeze his brother's graduation shoot between two weddings, we jumped at the chance - especially with Gavin being such a soulful subject. It was a welcome intermission separating two hectic and exhausting weekends, and we loved being invited to participate in another element of this wonderful family's life.
Pine State Biscuits is a pretty stellar start to a mini Day In The Life Of Portland-grad shoot, and Gavin offset the hearty chicken + biscuit with a shot of spirulina (...or was it wheatgrass?) and a slice of orange from the juice bus next door.
We had a little time to kill before our actual appointment, and you can never run out of canvas on Alberta St. - some striking wall art and old Volkswagens = make your own fun.
Gavin is a truly talented musician, and the entire tone of the session changed dramatically when we asked him to play the flugelhorn, one of several instruments he's mastered. Any trace of self-awareness disappeared once he'd made that connection, and sparks flew - it was incredible.
10:00 a.m. we were due at Modern Man, Portland's famed uber-hip old-timey barber shop, for some classic man grooming and a cup of Stumptown. Gavin's brother and our future groom, Alex, came along for the ride.
Freshly shorn and feeling dapper, we all jumped in the car and headed up North to the magnificent Columbia Park - special in that it's more like a forest than a playground, and it's not difficult to imagine yourself as being far from a city.
This was a perfect setting for some moody woodsy shots, and Gavin put on an incredible solo performance that drew a mesmerized bystander - and not the first time his music had made a compelling connection with a child in a park.
Wade and I were privileged to be allowed to photograph Gavin's graduation shoot, our goal being to provide an outsider's insight to a deeply creative young man, one whose passion in music and the function of an instrument is instantly apparent. Gavin has established Brehm's Mutes, LLC, working on perfecting the design for "the most resonant and tonally complex mutes available for brass players, by brass players." This love for and commitment to an art is what in turn inspires us, and we're tickled to illustrate a small chapter to Gavin's greater story.
